Get to Know the Faces behind Fancy Lad Farms and Wildlife Sanctuary

Todd Heilman

Owner and MO DOC Wildlife Rehabilitator

I grew up in a small town where my family owned the local grocery store. I worked long hours in the store beginning at nine years old. I learned to work long and hard and to keep things clean, hygienic and well organized.

My career in the US Army, Europe as a Recon Scout further taught me to keep things organized, maintained and ready for any eventuality. To have a plan but also fallback plans.

My final career as the top selling salesman for a Fortune 500 company, from which I recently took early retirement, enabled me to follow my passion for saving wildlife.

I fell into this 14 years ago when days after my son Shay's death I stumbled upon an orphaned squirrel. I raised and eventually released "Baby" and word got around. Subsequently over the next few years I rescued, raised and released nearly 100 orphaned squirrels. Then the calls started coming in for orphaned raccoons. It became clear this was unsustainable in my home in St. Louis. That is when I began volunteering at Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic in order to became a Missouri Department of Conservation Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator.

I subsequently bought and transformed my 107 acre property in Washington County, just an hour South of St. Louis into Fancy Lad Farms and Wildlife Sanctuary.

My will leaves the property to Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic in hopes that even after my death, they and what I have built will continue my work.
